OLED monitors

The ‘Screens of the Future’ article has already briefly introduced the concept of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology. This is explored in a little more depth – looking at what is shaping up to be the technology of choice for future computer monitors. We explore what OLED technology is, how it works and the advantages it offers over technologies such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). The disadvantages of OLED displays are also looked at, as are the current steps manufacturers are taking to rectify the issues to make them viable for the screens of tomorrow. This is a current hot topic for the website and we are constantly updating to reflect recent developments. Similar QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) displays, which have only recently been demonstrated, are also touched upon here.

IPS or 120Hz for gaming?

There are many differences between IPS panel monitors such as the iconic Dell U2711 and 120Hz TN panel monitors such as the Samsung S27A950D. These are two polar opposites, with lots to compare. Will we see 120Hz IPS Panels?

We look at the factors determining how responsive a monitor actually is in practice. There is a lot more to it than just quoted response times and supposed input lag. As with anything to do with modern technology what is written on paper by the manufacturers is often very different to the practical reality – if this wasn’t the case then reviewers and consumers alike would have a much easier task. Is it likely we will see 120Hz IPS panels in the near future?
