OLED (organic light emitting diodes) are a new concept and an emerging technology that we here at PC Monitors are very excited about. OLEDs have the potential to truly revolutionise computer monitors and other displays by offering vast improvements in colour, contrast, response time and efficiency over LCD monitors. Another concept using similar principles replaces OLED pixels with organic transistors and has been discussed in Nature Materials and other scientific journals. OLETs promise similar advantages to OLED technology, but incredibly are claimed to be even more efficient due to current flowing directly through the transistor rather than passing through the various layers of an OLED cell. At the moment there are problems with OLETs related to poor brightness and the fact that transitors are tiny (leading to resolutions too high for other hardware to handle correctly). There is no word on cost yet, but really this is just a concept that manufacturers may consider for the future or as a potential alternative to OLED in large displays where efficiency improvements could be particularly worthwhile.
